ポルトガルのコロニーであるインドのゴアには、16世紀後半から17世紀にかけて日本国内でのキリスト教徒の迫害を逃れたもの、あるいは性奴隷として捕らえられた婦女子千人以上の日本人奴隷が、ポルトガル人や日本人の船員によって売られていた。いずれの場合もほとんどがゴアの現地人と結婚をしていった。
